Hatley Castle may be famous for starring in X-Men, Smallville, and Arrow but the real hidden gem is the Japanese Garden tucked behind it on Vancouver Island.
Built in 1910 by landscape architects Brett and Hall, the Japanese Garden was part of James and Laura Dunsmuir’s grand estate vision. With koi ponds, hand-carved stone lanterns, and a gentle waterfall, it was designed as a place of calm, a counterpoint to the bustle of Edwardian life. More than 100 years later, it remains one of the most peaceful cultural spots in Victoria, BC.
Join me as I explore the gardens, wander over curved bridges, and discover why this space deserves just as much attention as the castle’s Hollywood fame.

So, yes, Hatley Castle is Hollywood famous, but for travelers like us, it’s these gardens that steal the show.
