The International Tree Foundation and Community Action Groups Oxfordshire are running the Garden Tree Giveaway to boost local biodiversity, support wildlife, and improve the environment.

Lucy Staveley, UK programme development lead at the foundation, said: “Native trees provide critical habitat and food sources for local wildlife, enhance garden ecosystems, and help protect against air pollution and climate change.

“The Garden Tree Giveaway helps people to take climate action into their own hands and make a real difference in their own back gardens.

“This initiative is about more than trees – it’s about bringing communities together to take simple, positive steps for our planet.

“The enthusiasm we see from households across Oxfordshire each year proves that people love trees and want to be part of a greener future.”

Since 2022, the project has given out more than 8,000 trees, and this year’s scheme will see a further 7,000 given away during National Tree Week.

Residents can apply for up to two free trees per household from a selection of six native species, including hazel, crab apple, and rowan.

Trees will be available for collection from Thursday, November 27, to Sunday, November 30.

Each recipient will also be given a planting guide to help ensure the trees take root and thrive.
