I took some cuttings from my dad’s Swiss chess plant and have had them in water for a few weeks now and they seem to be doing well.

Are they ready to put in soil or do I need to wait for the roots to get a bit bigger? Thanks in advance, my first time propagating so any tips welcome!

  1. when the roots have roots, you can put it in soil. until then, just keep changing the water every couple of days

Id let them grow secondary roots (when the main root has roots), then pot them. Make sure you’re changing the water regularly

Then, pot them in a well draining airy mix to help avoid root rot. Water when the top couple of inches of soil is dry and put them in a pot 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball – don’t base the pot size on the size of the plant itself.

I’m not sure why such outdated advice is being given. Professionals specifically avoid secondary roots because they increase the likelihood of transplant shock. You want secondary roots to grow into the substrate to establish themselves instead of crushing them during transplanting. 💚
