Get ready to roll! Garden Lakes Elementary School (GLES) is launching its first-ever “Bike Bus” on Friday, October 10, inviting students and their families to ride their bicycles to school together. This new initiative is designed to promote health, active transportation, and strong community connections, and is being held in partnership with TRED (Trails for Recreation & Economic Development).
The Bike Bus provides an organized, safe, and fun way for students to cycle to school. To ensure the safety of all participants, the route will be secured with a police escort at the front and rear of the group, and the school nurse will be present. While parent attendance is not mandatory, GLES strongly encourages families to join the ride. All participating students are required to wear a helmet, in compliance with Georgia law.
Principal Mary Alcorn emphasized the importance of community events like this. “The Bike Bus is an exciting way to promote a healthy start to the day and connect with our families outside of the school building,” she stated. “It reinforces the idea that learning and healthy living are team efforts between the school and home. We are grateful for TRED’s support in helping us make this a safe and successful event for our students.”

A Morning of Festivities

Annual PBIS Pet Day: The Bike Bus leads into the school’s annual PBIS Pet Day, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Parents are invited to return to the school to participate in Pet Day, bringing their family pets to the fenced area behind the school to share with students.
Parking: Parking for viewing the ride’s end and for Pet Day is available at the Anthony Center next to the school. Families joining the PK-2 meet-up points should anticipate challenging neighborhood parking.
Garden Lakes Elementary School is dedicated to making learning meaningful and memorable for all students, and the Bike Bus is a perfect example of this commitment in action.
