Henning Larsen architectural, landscape and urban design firm has won the design competition for Gothenburg’s new Centralbadet, a public swimming and sports centre in Sweden.
The timber-structure swimming hall will sit within its surroundings, linking parks, riverfront paths and the wider city.
Offering fathering spaces, saunas, cafes and terraces, the 51,850m² Centralbadet intends to blend athletics with everyday recreation.
The material strategy balances durability with careful selection of materials that reduce carbon footprint and support reuse.
Timber is also used in interior partitions, ceiling elements, and insulation where possible, lowering embodied carbon. Designs for façades feature recycled bricks, and timber elements are designed for disassembly and reuse, creating a resilient, long-lasting building.
Henning Larsen comments on the design win in Sweden:
“We’re excited to continue developing Centralbadet in close collaboration with the City of Gothenburg, shaping a new chapter in the city’s proud sporting tradition while creating a positive social and healthy impact for everyone.”
The centre is expected to open in 2031.
