Wittunga Botanic Garden will celebrate its 50th anniversary this October with a community picnic that invites everyone to relax among the flowers and trees.
On Sunday 12 October the gardens at Blackwood will become a hub of colour, music and laughter as families and friends gather to share food, stories and sunshine.
For half a century Wittunga has been a place of calm for locals and visitors. The story begins with Edwin Ashby who first established the gardens as a private sanctuary filled with plants from Australia and South Africa.
His vision grew into one of Adelaide’s most loved public spaces and in 1975 Wittunga opened its gates as part of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide. Since then it has offered lawns for picnics, shady walks for families, and wetlands alive with birdlife. Generations of South Australians have visited for school excursions, quiet moments or days spent sprawled on blankets under the trees.
The anniversary picnic will honour that legacy while also creating new memories. Guests are welcome to bring their own hampers or sample food from trucks stationed within the grounds. Live music with Band of the South Australian Police will float across the lawns and children will be entertained with children’s activities thanks to Nature Play.
With the gardens in spring bloom it will be the perfect time to wander the paths, discover colourful flowers and perhaps spot a new favourite corner of Wittunga.
For the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium team the day is about celebrating not only the beauty of the space but also its connection to community.
Wittunga has always been a garden that has witnessed birthdays, first dates, school lessons and moments of quiet reflection. The anniversary picnic is a way to thank those who have cared for the gardens, those who have visited over the years, and those who will continue to find joy there in the decades ahead.
The spirit of the day will be relaxed and welcoming. Visitors can expect a family-friendly atmosphere where the sound of children playing mixes with conversation and music. Every corner of the garden has a story and on this day the stories will come together to create a larger picture of what Wittunga means to South Australians.
The Wittunga Botanic Garden 50th Anniversary Community Picnic will run from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 12 October. Entry is free and everyone is invited to join the celebration.
