Autumn foliage may appear beautiful, but when allowed to accumulate it swiftly becomes problematic. On walkways and driveways, the leaves become treacherous when damp, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

In garden areas, thick layers of soggy leaves can suffocate lawns, obstruct drainage systems and foster ideal conditions for mould and moss growth.

This explains why gardeners during this period turn to pressure washers, rakes or specialist leaf equipment to prepare outdoor areas ahead of winter’s arrival. Luke Newnes, a gardening specialist and Interior Squad member at Hillarys, advocates for using a leaf blower.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “I absolutely rate leaf blowers, they’re a game-changer for garden maintenance in autumn. For smaller gardens or light tasks, cordless models are powerful, quiet, and eco-friendly. Leaf blowers are more than just a convenience, they help keep your garden healthy by removing damp leaves that can harbour mould and pests. Just be sure to choose a model that suits your garden size and needs.”

One product specifically created for this purpose is the Hyundai 3-in-1 leaf blower, vacuum and shredder available on Amazon. Currently reduced to £39.22 from £49.99, it offers three practical functions within one device, reports the Express.

In blower mode, it utilises a powerful air stream to shift leaves into heaps, often the most efficient method for clearing paths or lawns. Switching to vacuum mode allows it to suck leaves directly into an integrated shredding chamber.

This process significantly reduces garden waste volume, with the shredded material collected in a 45-litre bag. The resulting waste can then be easily deposited into a compost heap or green waste bin.

The main attraction for home gardeners is its efficiency. As the machine shreds while vacuuming, it circumvents the issue of rapidly filling bags.

A reduction ratio of approximately 10:1 means a large accumulation of leaves can be condensed into a more manageable load.

Practical design features include a telescopic chute, which extends to minimise bending, and a 12-metre power cable, sufficient for small to medium gardens without needing an extension lead. Weighing in at 3.7 kg, it’s lighter than many petrol counterparts, and it comes equipped with a shoulder strap and wheels to alleviate some of the weight during prolonged use.

For optimal results, it’s advised to clear leaves on dry days, when the machine can shred more effectively and is less prone to clogging. It’s also sensible to rake away larger sticks or damp clusters beforehand, and because it shreds everything immediately, it’s crucial to ensure it doesn’t vacuum up anything solid.

Customers who have bought the device have shared glowing feedback.

One buyer commented: “The strength of the suction and blower can be varied by a dial, and on maximum, it provides just the right amount of power to dislodge stubborn leaves stuck in tallish grass, or suck up leaves in decorative stones without sucking up all the stones themselves.”

The reviewer offered advice for anyone who accidentally hoovers up something unwanted: “The mulch blades are durable enough to withstand the odd stone or other types of hard debris without being damaged, as long as you simply let go of the power switch as soon as you suck up something too hard.”

Another customer remarked: “It is very light but well balanced, quieter than my previous one and the collection bag doesn’t get in the way in use, sucks dry and damp leaves and mulches them ok.”

A third reviewer commented: “A great machine, picked up all the fallen leaves and mulched them . Lightweight and easy to use…Great price too.”

Naturally, not everyone was pleased, with several people noting that the bag tears when overfilled and that it becomes clogged easily.

Another option in the same price bracket is the VonHaus Leaf Blower and Vacuum 3000W, currently available on Amazon for £44.99. For a more budget-friendly alternative, gardeners might consider this £8 leaf-grabber set. Functioning like hand rakes, they simplify the task of gathering fallen leaves together.
