Get the lowdown on bonsai basics
Curious about bonsai gardening? On Oct. 13 at 7 p.m., the St. Clair Shores Yardeners will present a lecture by Jim Limback on the topic. Limback has been practicing the art for more than 40 years after being introduced to it through his “grandfather-in-law.” The past owner of a landscaping and remodeling company, he returned to the art form when he retired and shares his knowledge and expertise during the talk. Topics include what it is, history, types of trees used, preferred soils, pruning and care as well as examples of the tiny trees. The lecture will be held at St. Clair Shores City Hall. Finding your statement sofa
Looking to make a statement in your living room? Consider the offerings of Brooke Sharpton, the founder of Almond Wind, a Miami-based, Black woman-owned furniture brand that transforms sofas into intimate, statement-making works of art. Her mission is to reimagine furniture beyond utility—creating pieces that resonate with identity, culture and personal story, particularly within the Black community. After serving as a vice president at JPMorgan, she left her six-figure career in finance to follow her passion for design. What started as a personal quest to find a sofa that spoke to her tastes and values quickly evolved into a brand committed to craftsmanship, sleek modern design, and cultural authenticity. “A couch is where you laugh, cry, fall asleep, vent, love, live,” she writes on the website. “It should be art. It should be you.” Visit almondwind.com.
