I was mowing an elderly man’s yard for free when I heard yelling from across the fence. You’re making too much noise. My kid is trying to sleep. I looked up to see Karen, arms crossed, scowlling at me. Her husband stood behind her, looking just as angry. I’m just helping out my neighbor, I said, trying to stay polite. But Karen wasn’t having it. Her husband stormed over and kicked over the pile of leaves I had just rad up. If you don’t stop right now, I’m calling the cops. She snapped. I ignored them and kept working. “Big mistake.” Minutes later, red and blue lights flashed. The police arrived and Karen was already in full performance mode. “He attacked me,” she sobbed. “He pushed me down.” Her husband nodded. “Yeah, and he threatened us, too.” I didn’t argue. I just pulled out my phone and hit play. The video showed everything. Them harassing me, the husband kicking over my work, and most importantly, no one touching Karen. The officers watched in silence. Then one turned to Karen. So, you called us for a fake assault? Karen’s face turned white. The cops fined Karen and her husband for filing a false police report. As they walked away, one officer smirked. If we get another call like this, someone’s getting arrested. Karen was furious, but I thought it was over until the next morning. A fresh pile of trash was dumped in the old man’s yard. Clearly, Karen wasn’t done. What should I do next?
