Earlier this year, the Largs Green Futures group made improvements to a small area of derelict land and a disused toilet block at Barrfields Stadium to create a community garden.

Two temporary lean-to structures were erected to provide growing space and a food preparation area, as well as 12 raised beds.

However, despite agreement between the group and Largs Thistle, it was revealed that planning permission was required for the works.

The Green Futures Group has now been granted retrospective approval from North Ayrshire Council for the works already taken place.

Planning documents state: “We were unaware that planning permission was required to regenerate the derelict land and renovate the toilet block.

“The leaseholder was also unaware and granted us permission to carry out the works as it was improving the area and benefiting the community.

“As soon as we were made aware that planning permission was required, we have taken every step to comply.”

A new fence is also proposed to separate the main stadium area from the community garden project.

Largs Green Futures added: “The site had lain derelict and wildly overgrown for almost 20 years.

“Largs Green Futures began regeneration work in November 2023 and have been working tirelessly in partnership with local residents, schools, early years centre and community groups since then to create and nurture the development of a beautiful green space.”
