PORTSMOUTH TWP, MI – Country Garden Flowers will close its doors after more than four decades of serving customers, with owners announcing their retirement on the same date they opened the business 42 years ago.
Owner Renee Zuchnik announced the closure in a social media post, marking the end of an era that began on Sept. 30, 1983.
“So as many of you know my husband and I have owned and operated a floral shop and greenhouse,” Zuchnik wrote. “It is with mixed emotions today on the same date 42 years later we are announcing we are closing our business and retiring.”
The floral shop and greenhouse has been a family operation throughout its history.
Country Garden Flowers built its reputation on locally grown products, specializing in what they called “Garden Fresh” flowers. The business became known for its homegrown, high-quality geraniums and hanging baskets and planters offered in the spring season.
The shop expanded its services beyond fresh flowers, handcrafting evergreen cemetery decorations during November and December. The business also carried sympathy memorial gifts, including angel and cherub statuary, framed spiritual artwork, Kay Berry Memorial Stones, and wind chimes made in the United States.
Additional offerings included plush bears, balloons, Blue Mountain Art and Dayspring greeting cards, along with green plants and custom-made dish gardens. The shop also sold candies made in Minnesota by Abdallah Candy Co.
Zuchnik reflected on the relationships built over the decades.
“We have met so many people and have come to know them as friends. We will miss everyone,” she wrote. “We were fortunate to put our passion to use serving others in their times of joys and sorrows.”
The owners plan to hold a going-out-of-business sale, though no specific date has been announced.
