Low-maintenance plants to add year-round interest to your plot
Lily of the Valley shrub
Evergreen shrubs provide year-round interest, but in winter they become even more valuable, giving bare plots a touch of green and some structural interest. Whether it’s a clipped box hedge, a topiary bay tree in a pot at the front door or a holly tree covered in red berries, it’s a good idea to include some evergreen shrubs in your planting scheme.
However, too much evergreen can overpower and make for a static year-round picture, so the rule of thumb in general is to plant one-third evergreen and the remainder deciduous.
