Worried that I have too much sediment and detritus. And im pretty sure that the plants aren’t aquatic. All I could find in the creek was on the shore of the creek, not underwater.
I got algae and two small shrimp. Saw some worm things moving around yesterday

Not bad for a start.
Few things:
It’s not easy to find suitable aquatic plants in the wild. Everything that grows along the shore, emerges, grows tall and/or blooms, is pretty much not gonna work. It’ll rot and create a stinky soup.
Here’s what I would do:
Remove some of the larger pieces of debris, like dead leaves. Remove the plants and either raid a fish tank (yours or a friend’s) for an aquatic plant or alternatively find a plant that likes to grow with roots in the water, such as pothos for example. There are literally hundreds, just google it. I’m sure you even find something outside to dig up for that.
The only difference it would make is that you need to leave the jar open. All it’ll take is to add evaporated water ever so often (bottled water or water from the source). I have open and closed jars for the past 5 years and it really doesn’t make a difference.
Also, add more water up to where the glass starts to curve and keep it away from sunlight!
