I just inherited this tree from my mom! He was sitting outside and i just road-tripped with him for a few hours to my home. What are all these dead and yellowing spots on the leaves? Should I just cut them to help focus on new growth??

Firstly “these leaves” won’t recover..you may remove them all..

..and add more soil to cover all roots..l suggest watering them thoroughly each(water them once every 7-10days)..and don’t keep excess water in transparent saucer after watering

..these tropical plants need sunlight so much..so l suggest putting the pot on a plant stand/stool/table..etc., ..let them get more sunlight..

In the future,if you want more branches, thicker trunks and keep theirs height(your ideal height)..you just “always” pluck terminal buds(or new growths)off..more buds will grow along the trunks..trunks will grow thicker and thicker…..

I would repot into terracotta but do not damage the roots at all. The terracotta pot is porous and allows air flow to the soil and bright light will prevent root rot.

Just cut the plastic and put it into a larger terracotta with several inches of soil in the bottom and add soil around it.

The spots actually look like improper watering. The soil needs to be fully soaked to prevent air pockets where roots are staying dry. Watering Once every 1-2 weeks is rule of thumb. I add miracle grow to my water.

You can cut off the leaves if they bother you but they are still producing food for the plant so it’s up to you. There’s also the chop and prop method if you want a fresh start.

When you repot, try and separate out the individual trees. It looks like there are several in the 1 pot.
