HEMPSTEAD, NY — The Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing is breaking new ground this fall. The school’s Cardiovascular Science and Perfusion Medicine (CSPM) program is integrating virtual reality (VR) into the classroom.

Hofstra is one of only three perfusion programs in New York State and one of only three universities in the world currently using VR headsets for perfusion training, alongside Emory University and Texas Heart Institute.

The program launched a cutting-edge VR education program that allows students to simulate complex surgical environments and practice life-saving perfusion procedures in an immersive, risk-free setting.

This new initiative complements the program’s state-of-the-art training facilities, which include a fully functional operating room, advanced bypass pumps and multiple simulation systems that prepare students for high-stakes clinical scenarios.

“Hofstra’s perfusion program has always emphasized innovation and adaptability, and the integration of VR takes that commitment to the next level,” said Edward Delaney, program co-director and assistant professor of cardiovascular sciences and perfusion medicine. “This technology gives students a unique opportunity to hone their skills in a controlled environment before stepping into the operating room, and that contributes directly to their career readiness and long-term success.”

Students say using virtual reality will have an immediate impact.

Paul Ingrassia, of Westbury, called the VR program “invaluable.” He explained, “It could be a very intimidating and overwhelming place to jump into, especially if you don’t come from a healthcare background. To have something where you can establish a baseline knowledge for yourself before the OR makes a huge difference.”

With a 100 percent job placement rate within two weeks of graduation, Hofstra’s CSPM program has become a sought-after pathway for aspiring perfusionists nationwide. Students rotate through 21 high-volume cardiac surgical sites, gaining experience on complex procedures and working alongside top cardiac surgeons and industry leaders.
