SNIP SNIP: Just a light trim is needed at this time of year (Image: Petegar/Getty)
Prune buddleia lightly in autumn to deadhead withered flowers, remove seed heads and any spindly late growth. Using sharp secateurs, remove spent flower spikes just above a leaf or bud to encourage a possible second flush of flowers.
Most buddleia flower on the branches that grow in early summer, so a major cutback is best left until late winter or early spring. At this point, the butterfly bush can be pruned hard to a low framework of permanent stems to promote vigorous regrowth and abundant blooms the following season.
