She wants to be able to walk over a few feet while cooking and get what she needs. She also thinks the wall of greenery would be an aesthetic conversation piece and clean the air in the house.

Is this an infeasible Pandora's Box of problems waiting to happen?

If so, can you please help me explain to her the pros and cons?

If not, and it can be done, any advice and links to tutorials that would be very applicable to this specific product would be greatly appreciated.

It’s a great idea. Check out your local building material shops, they might have some outdoors solutions that you could put indoors or that could inspire you to make your own. (I just found this in Sweden where I live for example: https://www.bauhaus.se/planteringslada-bellissa-vagg-92cm )

But I guess you could also 3D print a wall planter to fit the size you need

I’m not sure how to arrange the irrigation / feeding though 🤔

  2. If it is indoors, then it will require at least supplementary lighting. If it is deep indoors away from sunlight, then it will require full lighting for plants. This will be (a) very bright and (b) rather costly for utilities (about 250-300W per square meter of growing area). And the lights will need to be on for around 10-14 hrs a day (or the plants won’t grow or grow very slowly) – not exactly great for home ambience unless your wife is an actress and can be comfortable on brightly lit stages.

Upkeep can be easy (depending on system) but probably requires a few hours to flush the system every week or so and also daily maintenance of pH and EC (which maybe takes 20-30 minutes) This also means that you’d likely want plumbing (fresh water) and drains (waste water) nearby or you’ll be carrying buckets full of water from place to place (very tiring and cumbersome, not to mention cleanup of the inevitable spills)

Plus, plants require care too. Some will inevitably fail or get disease. These systems spread disease very quickly, so problems have to be detected early and remedial actions taken immediately or every plant will die. This is almost certainly messy and time consuming.

If you have the space, maybe get a much smaller standalone vertical system to sit in some sunny spot as a trial. Actions speak louder than words – if she cannot maintain it, then a larger system will be even more tedious.
