Adam Frost, the presenter of Gardeners’ World, has opened up regarding his long-standing battle with fibromyalgia, a debilitating condition characterised by widespread pain and fatigue. The 55 year old first began to notice symptoms around twenty years ago, with the condition impacting his sleep as well.

Despite these difficulties, Adam found that his love for gardening offered a refuge amid a severe period of depression, which ultimately led him to professional psychiatric support. Speaking frankly with the Daily Mail, he recounted an uncompromising piece of advice from his psychiatrist: “What came out of it was that I shouldn’t retire. He told me I’d be dead in 18 months… [he told me] ‘If you’re thinking about retiring, go up the high street, there’s an undertakers, go in and choose yourself a box’.”

Adam said: “And I thought: ‘You’re supposed to be helping me.’ It was brilliant.”

Adam also reflected on the notion of retirement, remarking: “Why would I retire? Retire and do what? Garden? At least this way I get paid for it.”

Delving into the specifics of his health issues, Adam explained: “It started 20 years ago. I had sharp pain all over the place, I wasn’t sleeping. I was absolutely shattered,” reports the Mirror.

His experience with fibromyalgia spurred him to create a documentary aimed at increasing public knowledge of the condition.

A personal crisis arose when his wife Sulina suffered a serious health scare, necessitating a 12-week stay in the hospital in 2021, throughout which Adam was her sole permitted visitor.

“Then I caught coronavirus>Covid. I went into a room on my own for ten days and my brain, all the adrenaline I’d been living on – everything came crashing down. I was sitting in a corner bawling my eyes out,” he recalled. Adam opened up about seeking medical advice during this challenging time, with his doctor’s counsel being to be “kinder to yourself”.
