Autumn is well and truly upon us, bringing with it more rainfall and gloomier weather for our gardens compared to the sunny summer months. Despite this, plants and flowers can still thrive during autumn, although it won’t be long before everything but evergreen varieties start to retreat, readying themselves for the colder months ahead.
However, there are still several pressing tasks that need doing during this period. Even though it may seem like the end of the growing season, gardeners are being urged to brave the outdoors and carry out some crucial work that can help their gardens continue to flourish.
One of the most important tasks you must complete before the month ends revolves around your lawn, if you have one.

Given the amount of rain the UK typically gets during autumn, carrying out one particularly vital job could help prevent your lawn from becoming waterlogged and allow it to absorb the nutrients it needs to keep its lush and green appearance.
UK horticulturist Michael Griffiths has urged everyone with a grassy area to aerate it within the next two weeks to ensure the turf stays healthy throughout autumn, reports Lincolnshire Live.
If you’ve never aerated a lawn before, don’t fret – you only need one tool to do the job.
He explained in a TikTok video: “Improve your lawn’s drainage by aerating it – all you need is a garden fork. You want to go in 4-5 inches deep. Plunge [the fork] in and pull it back a little. Pull it out, and repeat every six inches or so across the garden.”
Michael explained that you can leave the holes empty or fill them with horticultural sand.
Fantastic Gardeners explains that lawn aeration allows air and water to penetrate grass roots more effectively.
Increased air circulation means grassroots can take in more oxygen whilst releasing carbon dioxide more efficiently.
Enhanced water penetration deeper into the soil also maintains green, healthy grass.
Throughout winter, without proper aeration, water may pool on the soil surface, causing moss growth and potentially encouraging diseases that damage grass.
How to aerate a lawn:
1. Choose the Right Time.
2. Prepare Your Lawn.
3. Select an Aerator.
4. Aerate the Lawn.
5. After Aeration Care.
Lawn aeration should never occur during drought conditions or extreme heat, with most lawns requiring aeration just once annually.
Heavy-use lawns or clay soil may require aeration twice yearly, though.
