OCHEYEDAN—Weeds may seem like a minor nuisance, but they pose a major challenge to gardeners, farmers and land managers alike.

Understanding weed science is essential for maintaining healthy landscapes, improving crop yields and protecting native ecosystems.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offering Horticulture Learning Sessions this fall as part of its Master Gardener training.

Horticulture enthusiasts and Master Gardeners are invited to a special learning session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Willow Creek Country Park three miles west of Ocheyedan.

The program will focus on weed science, led by Beth Lorch, an active Osceola County Master Gardener.

Lorch has a passion for helping gardeners understand the science behind plant health and weed management.

The session will be hands-on with an emphasis on weed identification and will cover key topics, including:

Weed classification.Weed life cycles.Weed management and control strategies.

Attendees are encouraged to bring weeds they are curious about for identification and management advice.

Time permitting, Lorch will lead the group on a walk around Willow Creek to find and identify weeds.

The program is open to the public, but registration is required. Interested participants may register online at go.iastate.edu/HORT25 or call 712-754-3648. Registration closes Sept. 30, so early sign-ups are encouraged.
