Coimbatore: The city corporation’s two-day nursery and rooftop gardening expo got under way at Race Course on Saturday, aiming to inspire residents to embrace rooftop gardening, landscape greening and urban greening, while promoting the concept of converting waste into wealth. The expo showcases a diverse array of nurseries, composters, fertilizers and recycled materials, offering attendees a comprehensive look at sustainable gardening practices. In a bid to enhance green cover in urban spaces, the city corporation is planning to establish a rooftop garden at its main office. This initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage more citizens to participate in similar activities. The expo also focuses on waste management, with an emphasis on the importance of source segregation and home processing. The benefits of home gardening are numerous, including access to fresh and organic produce, physical activity, stress relief, and improved diet, says a corporation official. “It also serves as an educational opportunity, teaching both children and adults about plant life cycles and ecosystems. Home gardens enhance the aesthetic appeal of a property, contribute to biodiversity, and offer cost savings on groceries. They also provide a sense of accomplishment and foster community connections.” Another corporation official says the rooftop gardening offers unique advantages such as efficient space utilization, improved air quality and temperature regulation. It aids in stormwater management, mitigates the urban heat island effect and reduces noise pollution, he says. “Rooftop gardens increase biodiversity, allow food production in limited spaces and enhance property value. These gardens also offer a recreational space for relaxation and social gatherings, providing a green oasis in urban settings.” The expo, which would conclude on Sunday, highlights the transformative potential of gardening in urban environments, encouraging residents to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both individuals and the community.
