Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost has warned green-fingered fans not to get caught out by the changeable weather as Spring approaches.

Speaking to The One Show host Alex Jones on BBC Radio 2, the gardening legend advised people looking to tinker with their garden to prepare the soil and not to do too much too soon, given how changeable the UK’s climate is – after going from 17 degrees one week, to single figures and below the next.

On that, he said: “In reality, I would just take my time a little bit. I think, in reality, we can’t garden like we used to. Times have changed, so we have to be a little bit nimble so what I tend to do is, I don’t tend to sow anything in the garden until the weeds really start to grow. So, I’m waiting for signs now.

“So, for me, it’s preparation. I’ve got stuff going in the greenhouse…just a little bit of, sort of, herby bits and pieces and a few veggie bits for the garden really, but nothing too much at the moment.

“I might pop down the garden centre, get myself a few bulbs in the green. So, there’s stuff going on, but don’t go rushing. Take your time – I don’t want people getting caught out.”

Adam also went into detail about his top tips for managing the soil, recommending this as one of the things people could start cracking on with before the weather stabilises. He said: “I think the most obvious is the soil, in reality, and we probably overlook that a little bit as gardeners.

“We take our soil, at times, for granted. So, anything you can do now to get out, do a little bit of mulching, prep the soil, for the season, whether that’s the veg garden, or that’s the ornamental garden. So, any compost, manure, anything like that you can get hold of to start to feed the soil, that will be absolutely brilliant.”

Whilst Adam has been passing words of wisdom over the airwaves, he has also been open about his own health and how he struggled mentally during the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.

Talking on the Gardener’s Corner podcast, he admitted: “In September 2021 I ended up locked up in a room with Covid and out of that, 10 days later I was sat in front of a psychiatrist and they said you’ve got burnout and depression. Which is a surprise, because I only went in the room with Covid.

“But, it was born out of Mrs Frost being poorly during lockdown and one of my littluns. I think they said that everything had caught up with me and I have a difficult past, and I never really dealt with it.”
