Did some chaos gardening this year and then put up an arch after the pumpkins swallowed the entire bed. This gal on the right is HEAVY but not orange yet. I am terrified she's going to fall and meet her fate soon. How can I keep her up there until she's ready to be carved? less

    Nylon stocking. Pull it up over her and tie it to the arch. If you’re worried about runs, do 2 stockings.

    Stockings, jute string, an old sheet, burlap, piece of wood cut to size underneath. There are so many ways to support this. That’s all you’re looking for is support. Use your imagination and support it. Gardening should be fun and cheap. Use what you got

    I bought some of the hammocks that are in kids room to hold their stuffed animals. Got them at the dollar store and just zip tied it to the trellis.

    My sib and spouse had two adjacent canteloupes kinda like this (no arch, though).. neighbor suggested using spare bra….worked well, both ended up over 4 lbs…. gave one to said neighbor…whose hubby said the boobaloupe was delicious

    We cut up old synthetic t shirts into wide strips and they’re holding up a bunch of 20+ lb Musquee de Provence & cheese squash.

    I have used nets for pumpkins and watermelons. I use rope of zip ties the secure the nets to the frame. They were sold as “melon hammocks” on Amazon.

    You actually don’t need to support individual pumpkins. I grow them vertically too and they stay strong at the stem until you cut them down (barring the plant dying). As soon as it passes the fingernail test, I clip it and take it down to cure.
    For melons, you do need to give them support, like a homemade hammock sling, as they can fall off when ripe
