WARSAW — Jefferson STEM Elementary recently welcomed Steven Koontz, Indiana Master Gardener and owner of Keep It Watered, for a hands-on learning experience with Jefferson’s six aeroponic tower gardens.
The gardens, made possible through generous donations from Da-Lite/Legrand and the K21 Health Foundation, have become an ongoing part of Jefferson’s STEM program thanks to Koontz’s continued support with materials and expertise.
Joining Koontz were Chuck Harvuot, Indiana Master Naturalist, Shubhra Pathak, Jefferson’s STEM assistant, and Derek Pike, STEM coach. Together, they guided students through planting seeds, exploring the inner workings of a tower garden and applying key science vocabulary in a real-world setting.
“This was truly an interdisciplinary learning experience,” shared Principal Joshua Wall. “Our students connected science, engineering and environmental stewardship in a way that was both meaningful and fun. Community partners like Steve Koontz and Chuck Harvuot make STEM education come alive for our kids.”
Jefferson STEM Elementary’s tower gardens are just one example of Jefferson’s commitment to sustainable, hands-on learning. Students have the opportunity to bring classroom concepts to life while developing a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship and the importance of healthy living.
