A new memorial garden has been planted in memory of a high school student who lost his life to gun violence.

Saturday marks three years since 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde was shot and killed outside Roxborough High School, right after a football scrimmage.

He died in his mother’s arms, and the shooting devastated the community.

School leaders said they wanted to reclaim the space where the shooting happened and transform it into a meaningful tribute for Nicolas.

The shooting happened on September 27, 2022, around 4:41 p.m., near the Roxborough High School football field, police said. When officers got to the scene, they found five shooting victims.

One of the victims, Nicolas, was pronounced dead shortly after at an area hospital, police said. Four other victims, all teenagers, sustained gunshot wounds ranging from graze injuries to more serious leg and arm injuries.

Six individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.
