BBC star Adam Frost has revealed how a Bruce Springsteen track inspired him to grow a “secret” garden in a touching tribute to his wife, Sulina.

Over the years, Adam has become one of the most respected names in horticulture, thanks to years spent on Gardeners’ World.

However, during a recent appearance on Zoe Ball’s Saturday Show on BBC Radio 2, Adam revealed how going to watch Bruce Springsteen at Glastonbury back in 2009 had a major impact on his garden.

Admitting that he hadn’t originally been a huge fan of the American singer, he said: “I wasn’t really a Bruce (fan). You know, I didn’t really get it I don’t think, and then I was at Glastonbury and, I must have been about 40, and I stood there with tears running down my face.”

He revealed to Zoe how Bruce’s ‘Secret Garden’ track inspired him to pay tribute to Sulina, who’s a huge fan of the song, saying: “That song gives me goosebumps, it’s very much a Mrs Frost song. I used it to create a part of the garden, suppose it’s partly about her, it’s partly about this space in the garden that’s secret – it’s tucked away.”

He explained that music has always provided him with inspiration when it comes to planning his garden, adding: “But when you go in, it’s safe, it’s green, and it’s calm.”

“I use music a lot when I’m designing – so if I’m going to design your garden, it would be around certain songs to create a atmosphere.”

Meanwhile, in a post on Instagram last year, he explained how his love of music has always acted as a source of inspiration when designing gardens: “I love lyrics, and over the years I’ve used music an awful lot when I’m designing.

“So every single client that I create for will have an album. They don’t always know what the album is, but they’ll have an album.”

During his time as one of the UK’s most well-known gardening experts, he has secured a number of gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show, and has been an ambassador for the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) since 2014.

But, most know him for his time on BBC Gardeners’ World, which he joined back in 2016.

He is set to make his return to our screens this evening as he takes a trip to a spectacular garden located in North Yorkshire.

Gardeners’ World will air this evening (Friday, 26 September) at 8 p.m. on BBC Two.
