COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The Texas heat can take a quick toll on you while you’re gardening.
There are simple steps to take to protect yourself.
Wearing a hat will make a difference, said Stephen Brueggerhoff with Texas A&M AgriLife.
“I do have this hat. It’s got a little bib on the back side of it so that it’ll protect your neck,” said Brueggerhoff.
Sunscreen, plus loose and light clothing are also important.
“I think the most important tools in your toolbox are your hands and your eyes,” said Brueggerhoff. “I have fair-colored eyes, so I wear these oversized glasses to make sure that I’m protected.”
It’s also important to stay hydrated and keep track of your time outside.
“What I’ve learned over time is to go ahead and just take your cell phone, set a timer and do this in 20 to 30 minute increments when you’re outside,” he said. “That way, if you forget, you’ve got a reminder and can quickly get out of the sun and into the shade.”
Brueggerhoff also suggests gardening with a buddy so you can look our for each other. He also says gardening in the early part of the morning or later in the evening will help you avoid some of the harsh heat.
