The project will create a burst of colour across roadsides and verges in Middlesbrough.
The seed giveaway is the idea of Longlands and Beechwood ward councillor Joan McTigue, who has partnered with Mike Heagney of Tudor Croft in Guisborough.
Volunteers at Tudor Croft, one of Teesside’s largest privately owned gardens, collected hundreds of thousands of poppy seeds from the garden’s blooms.
Mr Heagney said: “Poppies bring joy to everyone and they are always very symbolic – for example, those that appeared on the fields of Flanders in World War One are still remembered today.
“The seeds we’ve given to Cllr McTigue will flower in a range of bright mixed shades and will help to fill Middlesbrough’s roadsides and open spaces with a lot of colour and joy.”
Councillor McTigue said: “Despite not living in Middlesbrough, Mike has always been incredibly generous in helping to make my ward more colourful.
“His team have once again harvested thousands of poppy seeds and I’ve also harvested a lot of sweet pea and hollyhock seeds.
“I’m happy to deliver some to fellow gardeners in the town if they contact me and I’m in talks with Council staff as to where we can plant in public areas.”
The seeds are available to residents who want to help beautify their neighbourhoods.
Anyone interested in receiving seeds can contact Cllr McTigue by email at joanmctigue45@gmail.com.
Mr Heagney’s Tudor Croft garden helps to support local charities through its open days, including Kids Kabin in Grove Hill.
