HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – Nearly a year after opening its new storefront, a Hancock-based business has added something new to its exterior.
The Keweenaw Co-op has finished construction of an outdoor native plant garden. It is located just outside the storefront’s main entrance. The business hopes it adds some additional beauty to Quincy Street while also supporting pollinators.
“It’s more of an ornamental garden,” Co-op General Manager Curt Webb said. “We were intending on doing a rain garden… engineering-wise, we didn’t end up quite with a rain garden, but we did opt instead to go in the same direction.”
The co-op worked with three groups to create the garden: Richardson Landscape Design, the Keweenaw Wild Ones Group and the Keweenaw Invasive Species Management Area.
“Right now, it looks fairly sparce out there, but this is a month and a half of it being in place,” Webb continued. “Next year will look better, but they say in the second year after planting is when it really comes into its own, and you begin to see full beauty and the full spectrum of what we’ve planted.”
Webb says there are no plans to expand the garden, but that more plants will be added as needed.
