Recently, had the whole lawn overgrown with weeds, got rid of them all and pretty much just had a dead patch (other than some couch grass remaining in the corner, see far left side of lawn). Where the lawn was overgrown with weeds, I THOUGHT the grass was regrowing, but after looking closer it seems like some sort of weed has completely taken over the lawn.

What do I do at this point? A selective herbicide? Kill it all with Roundup, then patch turf?

Located in Townsville, North Queensland.

EDIT: Mr. ChatGPT has identified it is nutgrass? Is this accurate?

Does anyone else think it’s nutgrass? If so, sedgehammer.

Yeah looks like nutgrass to me. RIP. Welcome to the everlasting war…

I think an issue you’re also facing is the amount of light that section of your lawn receives.

In your photo it’s covered in shade and I assume it’s the same throughout the day.

Probably why only weeds want to grow there.

I have the same problem with a section of my lawn and I’m sorry to say I don’t have a solution. It’s a rental so I can’t just put a garden bed there.

Sorry, that’s not going away, looks like the nut grass that inhabits my nightmares. The tubers persist for years. Try the selective herbicide mention by others here.
