So to start, I have two string of pearls bought in the same condition/same time and potted in the same pots. They hang side by side and have both been thriving for 3+ years. I have to cut them every couple of months because they grow so long! I have made literally dozens of babies from their cuttings that are now thriving with family and friends.

Why do I need advice for good looking plants? Well, see the second pic for how they look in the pot. The soil has shrunk up into the middle away from the sides, and there is a ton of shriveled dead material in there. The pots don't have drainage (they sit above my couch) and I have never fertilized them. I brought one down today to try and prune out some of the dead material and I'm wondering if it's time to repot. Unfortunately these hanging pots are the only place I have for them currently due to their size (and I have cats so I want to keep these out of reach). I have consistently watered them once a week and live in Toronto, so they get bright sun in the summer and a lot of grey days in winter.

I guess I want to ask, should I make changes? Or are their constant growing petals a sign that they are happy enough as is? They are my first string of pearls plants so I am a complete newbie, and I'm sure I could be doing more. If I had more space and windows I would love to upgrade them, but I'm wondering if I should just leave them and not fix what isn't broken? Thanks for reading!

Honestly, if you wanted to, you could start over entirely. Chop every hit of green off, start a new pot of soil (or multiple) and lay these down in there in 3-5 inch segments, cover with a very thin layer of soil, and let it grow.

Or, just let it keep doing its thing. With it hanging like that, it’s not like you look at the top of the pot that often

If this was mine, I’d drop the hanging planter a few inches, sops want sunlight to hit the top of the plant. Then I’d pin down those dry crispy bits and put a new scoop of dirt over it. And then idk if you know, but a helpful tip I learned with sops is to give the pearls a lil squeeze before you water, if they are plump and firm you can hold off, if they are squishy it’s time to water

I don’t think it needs a repot, but a chop n prop would look nice. And if that happens to involve a new pot, then cool. (Just one girl’s opinion)

You could start a lot of pots if you wanted to.

Please tell me how to grow them successfully. Yours are amazing.

They are incredibly hard to grow well and most people just kill them, so it looks like you have ideal conditions. I’d leave them alone. They look gorgeous.

I read this as “should I REPORT my huge string of pearls?” And to that, I say…yes. Report it for being too amazing! πŸ˜‰ I’m silly, but it does truly look great!

Forgive if I seem rude but uhh… THAT BE A BALD HEADED HEIFER 😱🀯😳 lmao I agree with others saying to just restart when ready, go ahead and chop it back and use the cuttings to regrow! Lots of stores put em in hanging pots and people make the same mistake thinking the top of the pot doesn’t need light, so don’t worry it happens lol Look up Plants With Krystal she has some great videos on sting of things!

I would just add soil and cutting to the top to fill it out.

trim them and fill in the top, or leave it be- either way they’re thriving!

i have string of banana that’s down over 3 ft this summer outside, i’m very nervous about moving inside once it gets β€œcold” where i live. thankfully my bedroom gets the best light all winter!
