As summer draws to a close, it’s easy to neglect your lawn, but autumn is actually a crucial period for lawn care. If you’re aiming for greener grass blades, vibrant lawns and a weed-free environment, then overseeding is essential, say the gardening experts at Garsons.
They explained: “You might notice your lawn growing thinly over the years and patchy in places, allowing weeds to grow in the bare areas.
“Overseeding is perfect for these areas to avoid weeds, but can also be used to thicken up most areas of the lawn. “
This gardening task involves a seed spreading technique that promotes denser lawn growth. They asserted that autumn is “by far the best time” to overseed lawns.

So, how do you go about overseeding your lawn?
The procedure consists of five straightforward steps that require a rake, a lawnmower and a garden fork.
Begin by eliminating weeds and any fallen leaves or other obstructions. You can also use a rake or a scarifier to remove any moss if necessary, reports the Express.
Mow the lawn on a low setting and ensure all clippings are collected to facilitate seed spreading later.
The next step is to prepare your soil by forking holes into the lawn and adding a thin layer of dressing over the area to be seeded. This only needs to be very thin and is referred to as topdressing.

Sow your lawn seeds according to the packet instructions and lightly rake to ensure the seeds make contact with the soil.
The final step is to lightly press down, walk or pat the area to ensure the seeds are properly embedded in the soil.
Following this process, it’s crucial to ensure that the grass seeds don’t completely dry out – they require moisture to survive.
Water gently to prevent the seeds from being washed away by excessive pressure, and maintain their moisture to facilitate germination.
Your lawn will require mowing, but start on a low setting in spring and gradually increase it. For newly sown seeds, ensure the grass is at least 5cm to 8cm tall before you cut on a high setting.
