Help! I live on Florida's west coast and have been looking to transform our small patch of backyard turf (to be fair, it was 90% weeds) to a more natural landscape. We live on a small lake, so I want to be careful with chemicals. Since the beginning of May (!) the area has been covered with black plastic sheeting. I have worked in portions to dig up dead roots of various grass and weeds, but this one is still tormenting me! I thought the Bermuda grass was going to be the big problem, but these guys with their network of bulbs have actually pierced the plastic in spots. I just dig them up as best I can, but I want to know their name so I can properly curse them.

That looks the infamous nutsedge. Not really a problem in anything but monoculture lawns or gardens and friends. Those should be tubers which are basically like an big underground seeds for rhizome-based reproduction. This makes it very persistent, a bit like a potato, but in sedge form.
