Mote receives new river otters for Florida Watershed Wildlife habitat
Stella and Fynn, two North American river otters who were born at the Lowcountry Zoo of Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina arrived at Mote on Dec. 4
Founded in 1931, the garden is a National Historic Landmark set on over 9,000 acres of former rice plantations. In addition to botanical gardens, the site features American figurative sculptures and the Lowcountry Zoo.
A stroll through a garden can leave you feeling in awe of nature, where scenes of butterflies, flowers, and fountains are in full bloom.
On the South Carolina coast, there is one garden that HGTV is calling the state’s most beautiful, and visitors who have been there already will likely agree.
“We love gardens of all shapes and sizes (and know you do too!). And we just want to be sure you don’t miss any icons that could be right under your nose ― or on your travel itinerary ― when time is a finite resource,” the home improvement network wrote.

What South Carolina garden did HGTV name most beautiful?
Registered as a National Historic Landmark, Brookgreen Gardens was founded in 1931 by Anne and Archer Huntington. The Grand Strand jewel, located in the coastal community of Murrells Inlet, has been bringing smiles to the faces of guests ever since it was first created.
“American figurative sculpture finds its perfect setting among more than 9,000 acres of former rice plantations,” said HGTV. “The garden’s live oak allée — trees planted in the 1700s when the property was a working plantation — create cathedral-like spaces draped with Spanish moss.”
The botanical garden also features the Lowcountry Zoo, where native animals were either bred and raised in captivity or suffered a major disability caused by injury. These animals could not have survived life out in the wild, so the zoo asks visitors to respect them by avoiding feeding them and refraining from making loud noises.
How long does it take to walk Brookgreen Gardens?
Guests at Brookgreen Gardens can experience the park’s entirety at a leisurely pace in two days, per Myrtle Beach. Although boats and carts are available for rides around the site, visitors should prepare to walk several miles per visit (the main 1.4 mile loop takes 25 minutes to walk and most tours and events take two hours to finish).
