I was gifted some flowers in this vase, and now hoping to repurpose it for something like a terrarium, but not sure if that’ll work. It’s about 11.5cm (4.5 inches) tall and on each side. I’ve heard succulents are better for open terrariums, but I’m wondering if other plants could also work because I don’t prefer the look of a succulent terrarium. Or just any insight on if other plants could grow in here, whether as a terrarium or not. Any advice or suggestions would be helpful 🙂

Hey llov3bugg
Did you know succulents have adapted to grow and thrive in areas with limited water sources, dry periods, and bright direct light? Most terrarium spaces are the exact opposite of that which can cause terrariums to fail! If it’s your first terrarium don’t fret, we have a list of resources to help you build a successful and happy terrarium!

Looks good to me
My terrariums are all in similar jars some with lids some not! I will say, for most terrarium plants they are more accessible for me, having a lid is easier. However, Saran Wrap can go over the top for a little bit.
If you have transparent cling wrap you’re happy with, you can seal any jar by just carefully cling-wrapping the top and trimming the excess with scissors (for a neater look). You’ll have to redo it any time you open it for maintenance, but it only takes a few minutes.
You’ll definitely need a lid to keep moisture in for most terrarium plants (and especially mosses), but the lid doesn’t need to seal it off completely tight, the lid can also just be laid on top. Plastic wrap, acrylic sheet or cork trivet cut to size (or whatever else non-molding material you got in the right size to place ontop) all work.
