Been making them a couple years, but when I first started I only used collected materials. Never got any to stay alive longer than 3-4 months and I’m not sure what I could have done better, even after exhaustive amounts of research. So, I gave up for a while and then hurricane Helene happened and I moved and had a new space. Now I’m making them with my own soil mix and plants I grow; I do still collect the moss and hardscape. This is what I’ve done since I started making them again a few months ago.
TLDR; here’s my stuff

1) These were all created at varying times. 1st pic was like 4 months ago. Second pic the terrariums were probably 2.5 months ago and the little airplane thing is like a few weeks ago. The 3rd pic was like a week ago.
2) There’s a bunch of plants. Creeping Charlie, fittonia, string of frogs, pothos, philodendron, a random plant I found growing in water in a curb by some moss, couple different cacti, black rabbits foot fern, some lil guys that just grow out of the moss. Probably more I left out tbh.
3) 1st pic is a north facing window, terrariums are about 4.5’ from window. 2nd pic is a south facing window, terrariums are 8’ from window. 3rd pic idk where they have it, I made it for a buddies wife.
4) I water them once and add water (by the drops for the little baby ones) when I feel like they need it judging by the state of plant health and growth. I use distilled water, usually whatever is cheapest.
5) Substrate is a mix of organic potting soil, sand, orchid bark, perlite, worm castings, and sphagnum moss. Moss usually has some leftover substrate hanging around and grows in disgusting muck.
6) As you can see, they are all varying sizes. I’d say the 3rd pic is probably the only one I can give a veritable size, it’s probably 1.5-2 gallons.
