Viewers who watched a recent episode of Gardeners’ World were moved to tears upon learning about Steve, a professional inventor who lives with his wife, Pippa. Their story proved particularly captivating due to the windmill situated within their garden.

Whilst their account of restoring the windmill to its former glory was deeply compelling, the narrative soon took a heart-breaking twist. Steve revealed to home audiences that he had recently received a terminal cancer diagnosis, with uncertainty surrounding his remaining time.

He mentioned it could span “two months or two years, possibly”. Despite this devastating news, his optimistic outlook remained intact, viewing his cancer as a “new challenge”.

BBC watchers were compelled to respond to this moving story. One viewer posted on X: “Stunning cottage-type garden with windmill a bonus and unique. Typical cancer comes along for the bloke who still wants to finish the windmill. Let’s hope he can do it and beats the disease as he dearly loves his wife. #GardenersWorld.”

Another remarked: “Inventor man, what an inspiration #Gardenersworld,” reports the Express. A third person wrote: “Well that took a sad and rather dark turn,” accompanied by an emotional emoji. A fourth viewer similarly observed: “Wonderful couple – windmill garden #GardenersWorld #PositiveMindset.”

A further comment read: “How marvellous to have a windmill. Love it, shall we call him Windy Miller? No, call him Mr. Toad. He has the correct attitude, be positive, get up, dress up, show up and never give up #GardenersWorld.”

Monty DonMonty Don explained to viewers last month that his garden had suffered due to the dry conditions(Image: BBC)

During a recent episode of Gardeners’ World, Monty Don informed BBC viewers that his garden had been adversely affected by the dry weather. The seasoned gardener, aged 70, shared with viewers that the lack of moisture has taken its toll on various plants and vegetables in his garden. He emphasised the importance of watering for vegetables, saying “water is essential” and noted that strategic watering is crucial, adding: “What you water and when is key.”

Monty highlighted that his outdoor tomatoes were faring well despite the arid conditions, attributing their good health to weekly watering. He said that the tomatoes “like the heat and they’re not suffering.”

Conversely, it’s much different for his broad beans. Monty said that he’s never had to water them before, but this summer’s dry spell has caused them to struggle.
