Liriope, day lilies, and japanese spirea. I walk past this 5 times a week in all seasons and I’ve never seen a single insect here.

It’s nice the smoking section is right there to enjoy the dystopian preserve.

That was probably very well taken care of ~20 years ago by an experienced gardening group. Unfortunately, it’s pretty common for these gardening groups to eventually retire their upkeep of these garden areas and corporate landscapers take over.

The placard is celebrating 2002. So maybe 20ish years ago someone actually gave a crap.

    Sad to see.

god this country is a shit hole

Houston, Texas has some areas in parks labeled like that, full of ornamentals and also sprayed regularly for mosquitoes.

I think you should post this in the subreddit for your area. Probably won’t improve things for butterflies but it might embarrass the company enough to remove the sign.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to practice some guerilla gardening.

There are huge drainage systems by me that are miles long. They used to mow them regularly. They stopped a few years back and posted signs about helping the butterfly’s 😊

Aw hell yeah butterflies love foliage. I usually see them eating grass like leaves.

….you know what now that I think of it I might be thinking about grasshoppers

The one at my local park was worse. They did insufficient prep and it was full of creeping thistle, Johnson grass, tree of heaven, etc. I tried to give some advice on how to manage it, but they said “fuck it” and just ended up mowing it. Now it’s just grass again.

How come you don’t offer to take over it?

    It’s preserved FROM the butterflies

When I make butterfly preserve, I use quite a lot of sugar, some pectin, lemon juice, and only a little butterfly. Avoid monarchs, as they have a bitter taste.

Just kidding. No flowers there for butterflies at all. Who planted this mess?

This is where we do rogue gardening. Plant milkweed seeds all over this winter

  16. I do actually see pollinators all over the liriope in my neighborhood, so while it isn’t native, I suspect pesticides are the real issue
