Started this jalapeno plant in a 2L mason jar and it had been growing successfully until the past few weeks. Leaves are starting to droop and fall off and the water level seems to be staying about the same. I have replaced the water a few times and lowered the water level so the roots can absorb oxygen but hasn’t changed anything. Am worried the plant may have root rot? Any help is appreciated!

The solution probably got too warm due to the black cover and the roots suffocated due to lack of oxygen in the solution. Use aluminum foil to wrap the jars, and use larger jars, and never overfill them. The roots are dead and the plant hard to salvage. You might be able to take small clippings from the tips and root them. Soaking the whole plant in fertilizer solution several times a day for several weeks or spraying the leaves with fertilizer solution several times a day sometimes keeps a plant alive until new roots form. But it has a high chance of failure and is generally not worth the effort.

Check that nutrient levels are what they’re supposed to. Check that pH is 6-7 ish. Check that the water does not get too warm. Check if the roots are slimy, that indicative of root rot.

  3. The bulk of the roots don’t look great, but you seem to have some fresh white roots at the top.

If it was mine, I would probably give the roots a hair cut to about half their length, and the same for the branches, replace the solution with plain water for a few days and let it recover before adding nutrients.

  4. I’ll bet it gets cooked with sun’s rays magnifying through the glass.

Your roots are drowning and rotting. You need to oxygenate your substrate for deep water culture. Roots need air.
