Monty Don, the cherished lead presenter of Gardeners’ World since 2003, has been honoured on the show’s official social media channels as he celebrated a significant birthday on Tuesday (July 8). The horticultural aficionado, who has been hosting the BBC programme from his own garden for over a decade after a brief hiatus between 2008 and 2011, was greeted with a heartwarming message on his 70th birthday.

The celebratory post stated: “Monty turns 70 today! Living proof that gardening keeps you young. Please join us in wishing Monty a very Happy Birthday! #GardenersWorld.” Accompanying the post was a delightful photo of Monty smiling alongside his beloved dog, Ned, a regular companion on the show.

Fans were quick to flood the comments with warm wishes as Monty marked another year, reports the Express. One fan said: “Happy birthday Monty. Whoop whoop,” while another expressed disbelief: “I don’t believe it. Happy birthday Monty.”,

Another viewer wrote: “A very happy birthday to the most genuine presenter on the BBC.” A fourth said: “Happy birthday Monty Don! Looking cool and rudely young and healthy. Good luck to you, our favourite gardening guru.”

Monty’s birthday messages come after he received an outpouring of support after he posted a touching tribute to his golden retrievers Nell and Nigel, sharing a snapshot of the pair together. In a poignant Instagram post on Saturday, he penned: “10 years ago today: Nigel and Nell.”

Nigel passed away in May 2020, while his companion Nell died in October 2023 following a struggle with cancer. The pair were familiar faces to fans of Gardener’s World.
