Hi!

M girlfriend had this cactus for over 5 years now, and its really important for her.

We moved houses and it started dying. First the base started turning brown from the bottom up, starting to get thick and brown, but then once we moved the cactus started getting worse, turning black ish and starting to fall over, now the base is mushy and soft.
Is there any way of saving it? Is propagation my best bet?
If so could someone tell me any tips on how to do it, as it would be a first?

    Unfortunately no, he’s dead.

I don’t think it’s salvageable and I personally wouldn’t bother trying as rot seem to reach too far up. If you insist on trying, cut off the top and remove everything that looks rotten or damaged. Let the wound calluses and then plant it on top of a pot of soil. Keep it in semi shade and don’t water until it’s rooted. But don’t be too optimistic, it looks very rotten and will likely fail.
