Coimbatore Corporation is planning to handle garden waste within each ward using pulverisers, with the collected material to be handed over to private vendors for further processing and conversion into useful products.

The initiative follows an incident at the Vellalore dumpyard on September 16, when garden waste dumped at the site caught fire around midnight. The blaze was brought under control within four hours, thanks to the efforts of more than 50 Fire and Rescue personnel and 15 water tankers.

A senior Corporation official said, “The cause of the fire remains unknown. The garden waste had been kept separate from other refuse, which prevented the fire from spreading further. Continuous security personnel have been deployed, and the site has been secured with a compound wall and steel fire fencing.”

“The assistant engineer who was supposed to be on night watch duty at the dumpyard was absent at the time, and appropriate action has been taken,” the official added.

The official further explained, “Discussions are ongoing with vendors willing to collect garden waste and convert it into manure or other products. At present, five tractor-trailed pulverisers are operational across the city’s zones. Coimbatore city generates approximately 20 to 40 tonnes of garden waste daily. As part of the planning, we aim to identify empty plots within each ward, or combining two wards where necessary, for handing over the waste to vendors for processing. We also plan to increase the number of pulverisers to ensure that no garden waste reaches the dumpyard, thereby reducing the risk of fire in Vellalore.”
