My dumb kid bit into and then spit out a berry, and I can’t ID it. Not sure what plant it came from as my other kid picked it at daycare on Friday, apparently.

(Forgot to mention, we’re in BC, Canada!)

I think it’s black nightshade. Okay to eat at full ripeness when berry is full black. Unripe berries and the rest of the plant are toxic with high concentrations of solanine

I hope you can get it identified, you might try posting in the Facebook group for that they’re apparently very quick (someone please link it

You might also want to talk with the daycare about whether they’re aware of what plants they allow people’s children to have access to. Hopefully it’s non toxic in which case it’s not a problem but still worth considering.

This looks like black nightshade which is poisonous. Call poison control. If it was just one partial it will likely be an upset tummy, but you may need to go to the ER.

As an update… I called poison control, sent them the photos, but they said they can’t be sure without a picture of the plant itself. A cousin happens to have a black nightshade plant in their yard, squished it up, and it’s pretty identical to the seeds on my daughter’s shirt. We’ve been advised to monitor, but we’re likely in the clear barring some possible upset tummies. My kids now more fully understand not to eat random berries they find!
