Lister Hospital, in Stevenage, has opened its ‘Cura Garden Room’ in the cancer centre, thanks to funding from a charity which supported people facing treatment for cancer.
Cura wound up its operations in 2023 and donated its remaining funds to East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity to create the room and also to provide grants to people who face financial hardship due to having cancer treatment.
The room’s official opening ceremony took place on September 5 and was attended by Jennie Kirk and Richard Davies, the founders of Cura, staff from the centre, as well as donors and fundraisers who have supported the centre.
“The room is beautiful,” said Patricia Millward, matron and lead oncology nurse at the centre, who helped lead the project.
“It’s the perfect setting away from the clinic area for patients to relax in and enjoy the complementary therapies that we provide, thanks to funding from our hospital charity.
“Thank you so much to Jennie and Richard for funding the room. It will make such a difference to our patients who are going through the physical and emotional upset that comes with having cancer treatment.
“The room is a lovely, cosy space where patients will enjoy a bit of pampering and therapies such as massage and acupuncture which can help with the side effects of their treatment.
“We are always looking into ways we can make the experience better for our patients and this room will help them take a break from feeling like a patient and a bit more like themselves again.”
Eloise Huddleston, director of East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity, added: “We can’t thank Cura enough for funding this beautiful room and for grants for people going through cancer treatment who need financial help.
“These things make such a difference to people going through a very difficult time.
“Thanks also to our brilliant team in the cancer centre who work with us to raise funds so they can make improvements to make things better for their patients.”
