Feeding the birds has never been simpler. All you might need is an old coffee container from your kitchen and a dash of creativity.
A Reddit user shared a clever way to repurpose your old coffee cans on your property. They posted a photo showing a large coffee can with the center cut out and filled with bird food, placed in their garden.
The image also captures birds nibbling on the food from the can. The post received various responses, with users praising their thoughtfulness and ingenuity. One commented, “Very nice. I wonder if one could turn it into a bird house of sorts by using the lid as some sort of entrance! Perhaps a small door cut into the lid and some bedding inside for whatever species of bird you seek.”

According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), you can feed birds dried fruit, or fruits such as apples and pears. You can also offer seeds and grains like nyjer, millet, oats, and sunflower seeds.
“Be sure to look for good quality bird food – those that don’t include ‘fillers’ such as dried peas and beans, red dari and wholewheat that birds rarely eat,” the organization advises.
Don’t forget to add a small container with fresh water.

During the fall and winter, birds need high-energy, high-fat foods, according to the RCPB. Extreme weather may require you to refill the food container twice a day.
If you establish a feeding routine, the birds will get accustomed to it-so try not to change the times you refill the containers.
Taking precautions
“If you see a sick bird on your feeders, stop feeding altogether, thoroughly clean your feeders and store away from the garden,” the organization warns.
Take precautions when feeding the birds. Wear gloves and wash your hands well after cleaning bird baths and feeders.
