Gardeners’ World viewers usually tune in to hear Monty Don’s soothing voice and see his beloved pooches muck around in his garden on Friday evenings at 8pm. However, the green-fingered presenter issued a “devastating” update to fans on his social media, explaining that tonight’s highly anticipated episode has been pulled from the BBC’s schedule.
Taking to Instagram, the 70-year-old explained: “No Gardeners’ World this week (Women’s Rugby semi final) and apparently no space to squeeze it into anywhere else in BBC 2’s schedule, but here is the scant consolation of the veg garden.” While he couldn’t offer his regular BBC Two viewers the latest instalment of the series, he did share a photograph of his vegetable garden, which has been flourishing following the recent downpours across the UK in recent weeks as the summer draws to a close.
In the photograph of his rather wet yet green vegetable area, corn and other British produce could be seen growing tall. A greenhouse was at the end of the patch, down the bottom of a paved path.
Fans were quick to comment on the cancellation, as they were looking forward to watching the “important” programme this evening. One wrote, “I definitely miss GW when it’s not on; it’s the highlight of my week.”
A second said: “When will they realise GW is very important to so many?” Another fumed: “That’s my Friday ruined.”
Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: “For the whole week, I and many many other people look forward to the soothing and inspiring Gardeners World… The programme that makes the world a better, kinder, gentler place… it’s a very bad judgment of the BBC to underestimate that fact.”
“Oh no! We NEED Gardeners’ World to soothe us into the weekend, especially at the moment,” an upset fan shared.
“Please resume your “Hello, and welcome to Gardeners’ World” too @themontydon. It’s a silly request, I know, but I do miss it!”
Another added, “I spend the week looking forward to Gardeners’ World. The BBC doesn’t understand its audience.”
Instead of broadcasting Gardeners’ World, the BBC has been airing the Women’s Rugby World Cup match between New Zealand and Canada. It kicked off at 7pm. and will air until 9.10pm, with The Newsreader following.
Gardeners’ World usually airs at 8pm on Fridays on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
