I can't believe it guys, my KBG is starting to sprout after only 6 days!! This has never happened for me before. Usually its like 15-20 days. I'm hoping the wood chips that were in the top soil don't prevent some of the grass seed from growing. Regardless, I'm stoked!! Had to share it with you guys 'cause my wife couldn't possibly care any less lol.

I’m still waiting for mine to show up

  2. Mine came up in 5 days. Since then, it’s hardly grown. Day 20 now. I expect a lot of growth in the next 10 days.

Glad to see I’m not the only one who’s compost showed up with far too many wood chips included

Awesome. But yikes that’s a lot of wood chips

Maybe it’s rye in a KBG bag. Also, what’s up with people planting grass in mulch beds?

Those wood chips are going to inhibit the growth. I had to rake wood chips off my big box “top soil” after the seed failed to sprout and fill in. Maybe you’ll have better luck but that’s a lot of wood blocking the soil.

  7. Can mulch be used as an effective top dressing?

I have a lot of extra mulch currently and could definitely use it to top dress some bare patches that need seed if it will work.

  8. When wood chips and roots decompose they heat the soil up and burn your root system…. Remove them

Not me after 14 days of overseeding and not getting squat.

that looks suspicious to me. I won’t use Scott seeds tbh, it gave me weed issue years ago. Highly recommend twin city, GCI or united seeds. It is such a time-consuming and costly project, don’t use seeds with weeds in them.

This is almost certainly some type of ryegrass or tall fescue. Wait a few more days and see if the bottoms of the stalks are red/purple-ish. That’s a dead giveaway for ryegrass. Looks also maybe too light-green for kbg but that’s harder to tell this young.

Likewise, SPF 30 KBG sprouted in 6-7 days. Now on day 11, grass has come up pretty much everywhere. I think 14-21 days germination time is if you seed KBG in late fall where temps are pretty cold, I seeded in 80-90 degree days and it really comes up quick. Just my take. I also have a lot of twigs and mulch in my Kelloggs Topper bags. I read it allows the seed to breath better, so not too concerned.

Had some spots popping up at 6 days too. I can tell which spots were getting excellent water and which weren’t. Water is king. The dryer spots are 14 days and barely anything.

Woodchip mafia is making too big a deal. Just let it grow. It’ll fill in. Chips will break down. It’ll be fine. Chill guys.

  15. It’ll slow down considerably shortly. Nothing to panic about, just the reality of KBG.

Last year, My Mazama KBG germinated in 7 days. It’s known for quick germination.

I’m using Outside Pride 100% midnight KBG. But just reseeded two days ago. I’ll be ecstatic if in shows germination in a week. that would tell me it isn’t dead. Otherwise I’ll be waiting the expected 14-21 days in suspense. It has a pink coating of fertilizer and the birds 100% leave it alone. Tastes bad I’d guess.

    Good job

Hell Yeah! I had the same with TC Total Eclipse. It’s been about a month, and I’m probably 75% filled in already.

The wood chips are a problem, but they will break down over a long time…
