Here’s how to get an endless supply of raspberries and blackberries. And yes, they are different. So, both types are what are called caning fruits, meaning that they put out these long canes, and that’s how it spreads. But there is a difference between blackberries and raspberries. First up, we’ve got these everbearing gold raspberries known as fall gold. Now, raspberries tend to put out what are called runners or suckers or root suckers. It’s basically spreading via the ryome. So, this one plant is going to come out and new plants underground are going to sprout up and create a dense patch of gold raspberries, which is awesome. And that’s how you can get more plants. But blackberries are a little bit different. Yes, they will spread via ryome some, but for the most part, they spread via tipping. And a lot of black raspberries have the same effect where these long canes will come over and down. And when this tip hits the ground, new roots will form and it’ll spread more canes out of that. So, if you want an endless supply of blackberries and raspberries, make sure you know which type you have and how they spread. Let me know what you got growing in the comments below.

  1. In many parts of the USA raspberries are classified as a "weed", because they are so hard to control. I love them, but raspberries are the Kudzu of the fruit world!

  2. I grow boysenberries, blackberries and raspberries, gooseberries too. They grow well and I let them spread everywhere. Lately I'm looking to grow aronia berries, Cornelian cherry and elderberry. I'm running out of space in my urban garden in Toronto!
