JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Corrections says this year’s harvest by inmates at the state’s prisons was one of the best ever.
MDOC reports inmates at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman harvested 32,500 pounds of fresh produce this year, including squash, cucumber, sweet corn, bell peppers, okra and peas.
Delta Correctional harvested 55 pounds of pumpkin, purple hull peas, okra cucumber and zucchini.
Other prisons harvested blueberries, butter beans, tomatoes, eggplant, jalapenos and sunflowers.
MDOC says its farm program is “cultivating responsibility, entrepreneurship, and real-world skills that inmates can carry with them beyond prison walls.”
