Is this a good deal, or should I avoid? At my local Home Depot for 2999. They seem to be hard to find, as I’m guessing they’re fading this model out. Any chance I get it for less because it’s been sitting a while and the end of mowing season is near?

    I’ll be anti-battery guy here.

I can’t…possibly imagine a riding mower, on a battery. It’s crazy. The batteries on regular push mowers don’t last for an entire yard sometimes…smaller yards, sure…but more than 10k sqft? No way. And when they die, you pay another $1000 for a new battery pack…a single battery pack

If you need to use more than one, you’ll buy a new set every few years.

Battery is fine for smaller push yards….that don’t need real power. Gas will always win on power and longevity.

I would say find someone with one and talk to them (maybe someone here owns one). Also do some online research and see the reviews. I am not sold on electric riding mowers but that’s just me.

Unless you’re deadset on battery, I’d skip it.

Riding lawnmowers are a dime a dozen on Marketplace and such. Pretty much all gas, as riders haven’t really wholesale switched over to battery yet. But it’s trivial to find a perfectly decent mower for like $500.

Wouldn’t go anywhere near a battery mower, let alone a lawn tractor! It’s been sitting a while for a reason…..

Where do you live that you can get one? I really wanted this mower. I have a Ryobi push and other Ryobi products. They were 5000 but earlier this summer went on sale for 3k and all the stock disappeared. I am signed up to home Depot and they are going to let me know when they have some in stock. I contacted Ryobi customer support and they weren’t really helpful but indicated that they were no longer making these. It’s still on their website though. I still want one but not sure if I will be able to get one.

I love battery yard stuff for a small push mower sized yard. For a ride on, no way. Maybe if you were made of money the EGO but even then idk.

To chime in regarding whether riding mowers on a battery can be good, my sense is that has recently been shifting toward Yes.

The grounds crew that mows the lawns around my work now have at least one large battery zero turn that they use along with their gas mowers and it does just fine. And they’re mowing a huge campus, many acres worth of grass mowed over several hours. If a commercial lawn business does it I think that says something. But it’s a different brand of mower that is undoubtedly more expensive.

I’ve been using battery push mowers on my 1/4 acre for 9 years and am completely converted. Single battery charge easily covers everything with about 1 hour run time. Will never own gas again.

Run, don’t walk, away from battery mowers.

  9. I own a self propelled 22 inch and I love it, 1 battery lasts 2 cuts 60×100 almost 3 if you don’t use power assist

In 20 years, you probably won’t be able to find new batteries.

You’ll still be able to buy gasoline, though.

In general I like Ryobi products and have been impressed with the power in some of their recent battery power offerings including a snowblower that I thought there was no way would handle my steep driveway, but did.

But recently buying a mower, I could not bring myself to buy a battery tractor by Ryobi. Depending on the model the run time was only around an hour and if you account for eventual loss of battery life that just wasn’t enough for me.

Depending on the size of your job, storage capabilities, etc…might be a good deal. But I would want to see one in action, for sure. (Home Depot I believe has a pretty robust return policy for equipment like this? 30-60 days? Might be worth the gamble if you’re really interested).

I wouldn’t buy anything you can’t fix, especially with lawn tools. You want to maximize the value from them. The maximization usually starts when something breaks but you can fix it easily.

I have a Ryobi zero turn. It’s wonderful! I’ve had zero issues. I don’t understand the battery haters. It’s so much quieter. There’s much less vibration. Much less upkeep. No gas. No oil. No belts. There’s never been a time when I wish the Ryobi had more power. I will never go back to gas powered mowers.

The only caveat is circumstantial. That’s if you have a large property to mow, and want to get it all done in a single day. But if you have the funds, which you can save from not purchasing gas, you can get additional batteries. Swapping them is as easy as filling up a gas tank. You can also mow some in the morning, charge up the mower while getting other things done, and then finish up in the afternoon.

Professional landscapers are using battery operated mowers, now. They wouldn’t be doing that if electric mowers weren’t just as good or better.

I have a Ryobi push mower that’s battery powered. I like how easy it is to work with, but it’s almost all made out of plastic. After a couple mows, there are holes in the mulch-diverter flap and blade housing. I assume this makes it lighter so the walk-behind feature doesn’t destroy the battery. It just doesn’t look like it’s going to hold up very well.

It seems like few people have experience with this product, but the cost/benefit analysis really isn’t there, even if it’s a great mower (which I’m also skeptical of). You’d be better off putting the price difference towards an EV if you don’t already have one. Now if money is no issue, feel free to be the guinea pig and test it out.

  16. That’s a steal imo. I use all Ryobi for lawn care and they’ve been fantastic since day 1

That’s a good deal. I have a greenworks tractor and absolutely love it. It has 6, 80vx8.0amp batteries. Will mow my sloped 12,000 sqft yard 3 times on one charge. Easily tows a cart too. Costco version. Not cheap but price was not my top criteria. Gas is clearly cheaper but I just don’t want the maintenance anymore.

  18. That mower is listed at $4999 at my local home depot. I wouldn’t get it for $5k but at $3k that’s competitive with a new gas mower and much quieter so it seems like a decent purchase.

  19. I have the 80v 30” push Ryobi. I love it. It’s self propelled, super quiet, and cuts well. I never have to fool around with gas either (obviously). I got rid of my John Deere ZTR rider once that engine blew. I don’t have any gas lawn tools left.

I have that exact tractor. Can’t type up a review right now for you but easy answer is yes. I’ve had it for 2 years. My yard is about an acre.
